Jacob Abbott, who was a popular Nineteenth Century author of over two hundred books for and about children, certainly understood the mind and nature of a child and his expertise comes through in this book.

The absolute authority of the parent over their children must be achieved at a very young age, but there are better ways of winning over the heart of the young to complete obedience other than harsh words or even violent punishment.

Excellent chapters on "Gentle Punishment of Disobedience," "Rewarding Obedience," "The Art of Training," the place of "Encouragement and Commendation," and many other subjects rarely covered by modern Christian authors.
